Breaking the Pattern is a breast health awareness program created by Stephens in 2005.
Breaking the Pattern leverages the talents of senior fashion design students to create fashions inspired by breast cancer survivors and intended to promote breast health.
The students have 10 days to interview breast cancer survivors, conceptualize the design and construct original, creative garments that communicate a message about breast health awareness.
The rules are simple: use only “non-apparel” materials, make it attention-grabbing and don’t exceed $50. Pink is the required color.
Past dresses have been made from rubber gloves, toilet paper and even packets of sweet 'n lo.
Each year the garments are completed in early September, and we're proud to say that a few are chosen to become part of a District window display project every October for Breast Health Awareness Month.
To see more of the dresses, simply take a stroll in The District.
