Construction Street Closure at College

Columbia Water & Light will be installing new underground electric conduit for a construction project on College Avenue between Walnut and Ash streets on Monday, January 30, weather permitting. This construction project will require the closure of Windsor Street at College Avenue from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Motorists heading west will need to detour around the block using Melbourne Street. Traffic on College Avenue should not be interrupted by this project. Those traveling in the area are urged to be cautious for the safety of the electric crews.

MU Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. 2012 with featured speaker, Larry Willmore, Comedian, Writer & Producer.

As “The Senior Black Correspondent” on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Larry Wilmore adds his own unique comic perspective to the reality-based look at news, trends, pop culture, current events, politics, sports, and entertainment with an alternative point of view.

Wilmore began his career as an actor and stand-up comic before transitioning to television writing and producing in the early 90s. He's written for such shows as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and The Jamie Foxx Show. He co-created the animated show The PJs with Eddie Murphy and a few years later created The Bernie Mac Show starring Bernie Mac. Most recently he was a consulting producer on The Office.

The Daily Show has marked a return to performing for Larry and he is currently developing a sitcom for himself at HBO. His first book, entitled I'd Rather We Got Casinos and Other Black Thoughts by Larry Wilmore, was published in fall 2008. Wilmore has been nominated and received numerous awards including an Emmy, a Peabody, Humanitas, TV Critics, and NAACP Image Award.

As a cultural commentator and a successful Hollywood talent, Wilmore opens the door to an honest conversation about race and diversity in our country. He delivers a versatile and entertaining message, lacing it with his own comedic wit and a dash of levity in an interactive, multi-media discussion.

The event will be from 12 noon to 7 pm and the streets would be closed from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm. The abutting merchants have signed off on the proposal. The City's Special Events Committee (SEC) has approved this event. The CID Board will review this application on Tuesday, February 14 at 4:00 pm.

Chamber Challenge - SEC

As you know, there is a lot of excitement over the University of Missouri entering the Southeastern Conference (SEC). We want to make sure that our business community is ready for the positive impact this will have on your business.

Join Chair Vicki Russell as she leads a discussion on Thursday, January 19 on how you can benefit from the University of Missouri's move to the SEC. We are pleased to welcome University of Missouri Athletic Director Mike Alden and Director of the Missouri Division of Tourism Katie Steele-Danner as we prepare for our new conference. Also, you may have read recently about a new concept called Tiger Town. Greg Steinhoff and Bob Gerding will be on hand to give us a brief update on those plans. After their brief remarks, we will then open up the discussion where you can share ideas you have to welcome our out of town guests.

This event is open to all chamber members and will be held at the Clinton Club in Mizzou Arena. Registration and breakfast will begin at 7:00 am with the program to follow from 7:30 - 8:30 am. Ragtag Trivia Night Is Back!

On Sunday, January 29, join us at the Blue Note for Ragtag's annual trivia night. Questions will cover all types of films but if you're a Ragtag aficionado, you just might have an edge. Costs are $25 for individuals and $135 for teams of up to six. CID Special Event Recommendations

The Downtown Community Improvement District Board voted to submit the following recommendations regarding special events to Council:

Any street closure must receive at least 51% of signatures from abutting business owners.
Applications must be received by Council 45 days out from the event.
Ordinance should apply to the CID boundaries.
“Yes”, “No” and “Comment” boxes should be added to the signature form.
Instructions/web link explaining the process should be added to the signature form.
Some kind of generic notification should be placed on street barricades by the city to let customers know they can access the businesses.
Recommend considering an application fee structured the way Des Moines’ is.
Recommend adding an indemnification clause in the ordinance.

These recommendations will appear on the City Council agenda as a report on Tuesday, January 17. The ultimate decision regarding special event policies is Council's. City staff is also working on ways to improve the special event application process.

Temporary sidewalk closure at Eighth and Broadway

The city of Columbia Public Works Department announces a temporary closure of the sidewalk at the corner of Eighth and Broadway on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Boone County National Bank will have the sidewalk temporarily closed while crews remove holiday lights. This work will result in the closure of sidewalk throughout the day on Wednesday, weather permitting. While crews work on the Broadway portion, Eighth Street will remain open; when the Eighth Street side is closed, Broadway sidewalk will be open. Pedestrians are asked to use an alternate route.

EXHIBITION: A State Divided. Missouri and The Civil War

Missouri suffered greatly from brother against brother fighting during the Civil War. Images and objects in this exhibition chronicle the conflict, revealing the complexity of the period. Among the works on display are pieces by George Caleb Bingham and wood engravings from Harper’s Weekly and Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper.

The Seven Deadly Sins

The Columbia Art League is kicking off 2012 with their Naughty or Nice show aka The Seven Deadly Sins (and the Seven Holy Virtues).

Artists interested in submitting one or two works for the show, should bring them to CAL this Friday 6th or Saturday 7th January, from 11am-5pm. This is a juried show, open to both members and non-members. Jury fees are per person (not per piece) and are $15 for CAL members and $25 for non-members. The juror for this show is Doug Freed, award-winning artist and former director of the Daum Gallery in Sedalia.

Temporary sidewalk closure on Ninth Street

The city of Columbia Public Works Department announces that beginning today, Milan Contracting, who is working for MMII Inc., will temporarily close a portion of sidewalk along Ninth Street. The sidewalk on Ninth Street between Woodson Way and the Chipotle restaurant will be closed for approximately 25 days, weather permitting.

This closure is due to excavation work for a new mixed use apartment building at 308 Ninth Street. This closure will only affect the sidewalk on the east side of Ninth Street. Pedestrians are asked to use an alternate route.

Koonse Glass is replacing windows on the north side of the Guitar Building. This work will result in the sidewalk closure through January, weather permitting. This closure will only affect the sidewalk on the south side of Walnut Street. Pedestrians are asked to use an alternate route.

Public Art Opportunity: Short Street Parking Garage

The City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) invites artists residing in Missouri to apply for a public art project for the city's planned parking garage on Short Street. The art budget for the parking garage project is $47,000.

The Short Street parking garage will be located in The District adjacent to the North Village Arts District. Once completed, the multi-level facility will provide more than 400 parking spaces. This project will utilize pre-cast fagade panels and will be coordinated with the design of an adjacent boutique hotel and downtown Columbia architecture.

At this point in the process, artists should submit qualifications only, not design proposals. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of artistic and technical merit and strength of past work. Applications will be reviewed by the Standing Committee on Public Art. The committee will determine the three finalists to be invited to develop preliminary design proposals. Each artist will be offered an honorarium of $2,000 for time and materials in developing the preliminary proposal. The preliminary design proposals will be made available for public comment and a recommendation will be made by the Standing Committee on Public Art to the Commission on Cultural Affairs and final approval by City Council.

Living Windows Festival this Friday!

As the weather turns colder, shopkeepers throughout The District begin planning for the annual Living Windows Festival.

On Friday, December 2 from 6-8 p.m., shopkeepers move all the merchandise out of their front windows and stage live holiday performances for onlookers. As the rest of us begin our holiday shopping, they're concentrating on sewing costumes, building sets, writing scripts and baking cookies for customers. Merchants go to great lengths to outdo one another--making each year's displays even more impressive than before.

Stephens College presents “Necessary Targets” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday at Warehouse Theatre, 104 Willis Ave.

In this play, two American women, a Park Avenue psychiatrist and an ambitious young writer, travel to Bosnia to help women refugees confront their memories of war. Though the two have little in common beyond the methods they use to distance themselves from their subjects, they emerge deeply changed as they confront their own fears in the face of violence, resiliency and war. Based on interviews conducted by Eve Ensler with numerous women who survived the civil war in the former Yugoslavia, this show is a timely reminder of how America struggles to define its relationship with the rest of the world. USA Today says due to “Ensler’s straightforward intensity and delicate comic relief,” this show is “absorbing and moving.”

Sewer work rescheduled on Walnut Street due to weather

Beginning Thursday, Nov. 10, Remsel Excavating, working for Trittenbach Development, will close Walnut Street from Hubbell Street to College Avenue for sewer repairs. Walnut Street will be closed in this area throughout the entire project, including the weekend. The work is expected to be complete on Thursday, Nov. 17, weather permitting. This work was originally scheduled for last week but had to be delayed due to rain.

Walnut Street will be closed to traffic between Hubbell Street and College Avenue to repair a sanitary sewer manhole and connect a new service line. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when driving near the work area and use an alternate route during the construction work.

Sewer Work in First Alley North of Broadway

The city of Columbia Public Works Department will begin sewer repairs in the first alley north of Broadway, between Fifth and Sixth streets, on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 12:30 p.m. The alley will be closed to all thru traffic during the repairs.

Buildings along the alley will still be accessible via the alley entrance on Sixth Street. The work is expected to be completed by Monday, Oct. 10, at 5 p.m., weather permitting. If the work is postponed due to inclement weather, it will be rescheduled at a later date.

6th & Cherry Garage Closed for Cleaning

COLUMBIA, MO (October 4, 2011) - The city of Columbia Public Works Department announces that on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 6 a.m. crews will begin working on the Sixth and Cherry parking garage. Parking maintenance crews will wash and reseal the entire garage. This will require the garage be closed Oct. 5-7.

Individuals with parking permits for the Sixth and Cherry garage will need to park in the Fifth and Walnut garage permitted spaces during this maintenance work and display their existing permit hang tag. Hourly spaces are available in the Fifth and Walnut garage for visitors.

Council Approves Short Street Garage Design

Last night, the Council approved the design plans for the Short Street Garage.

Initially looking at 5 stories and 340 spaces, the Council realized that 275 spaces are already leased, leaving only 65 left for the public. So instead, they recommended a 6-story garage with 410 spaces.

Short Street will go through, and will be slightly widened. The brick will be removed. A pocket park will be built on the corner of Short and Broadway to soften the entrance to the hotel and garage. The garage itself is designed to look like a row of traditional downtown buildings and will have a Percent for Art component, key to a city building that will anchor the arts district.

The proposed commercial/residential space is still under consideration by the Council, although the working design did incorporate this space.

Help Warm Up Columbia!

The weather's nice now but soon the temperatures will be dropping, leaving may Columbians out in the cold.

Warm Up Columbia is an annual coat and blanket drive coordinated by the Voluntary Action Center. It provides warm items such as coats, hats, mittens, blankets, etc. to low-income families, the elderly, and disabled individuals.

Commerce Bank is helping out by collecting items at all their locations, including their downtown locations at 9th & Broadway and 5th & Broadway. They need all sizes of new or gently used items--anything to keep a body warm!

Painting of District Traffic Box Underway

Local artist, Stephanie Foley has begun work the most recent installment of our"Traffic Box Art" Program at Seventh Street and Broadway. The goal of Traffic Box Art program, managed by the Office of Cultural Affairs, is to make traffic signal boxes more resistant to graffiti while at the same time contributing to the uniqueness of the downtown streetscape. After a successful pilot project in 2007, the Office of Cultural Affairs launched an annual program in cooperation with The District. The signal box addressed by Foley will be the fourth completed project in the series.

Each project begins with the Office of Cultural Affairs requesting proposals from mid-Missouri artists. Local artist Stephanie Foley has been selected by the city's Commission on Cultural Affairs and a sub-Committee of the Standing Committee on Public Art for her design concept. Ms. Foley is a long time Columbia resident and practicing artist. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Missouri and works independently as a freelance graphic designer. The honorarium to be provided is $1,500.

On Saturday,October 1 and Sunday, October 2, the whole world will be walking again in the Fourth Annual Worldwide Photo Walk—the world’s largest global social photography event in the history of photography. Filmmakers and film lovers from around the world converge upon Stephens College and The District every fall to celebrate films made by women, engage in lively discussions, attend one-of-a-kind parties and experience what many (both male and female alike!) consider to be the most intimate and interesting new festival in the country.

Women make up a meager minority of filmmakers in our industry today and often have to face stereotypes on the kinds of films they can and should make. The folks at Citizen Jane are building the community they want to work in and the films they want to see through programming the best of films of all genres made by women today. This film festival crafts a unique experience with panels, intimate workshops and special events around each film.

Comprehensive Plan Public Meeting

The public is invited to the second round of public engagement meetings related to Columbia Imagined, the city's new comprehensive plan, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. in conference room 1A/1B of City Hall. During this meeting, the public will hear presentations describing "Who Are We?". Following the presentations attendees will be asked to provide feedback on the topics covered. This feedback will be used to assist the Comprehensive Plan Task Force, Planning and Zoning Commission and staff in further developing the plan.

Presentation topics will include descriptions of "Who Are We?" in the following categories:

Sewer work on Waugh Street

The city of Columbia Public Works Department will perform sewer repairs on Waugh Street Saturday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 a.m. Sewer utility crews will repair a sanitary sewer main on Waugh Street approximately 50 feet north of Paquin Street, between Paquin Street and Locust Street. The work is expected to be completed by 5 p.m., weather permitting.

Waugh Street will be closed to traffic between Paquin Street and Hamilton Way during the sewer repairs. If the work is postponed due to inclement weather, it will be rescheduled for a later date.

The Roots 'n Blues 'n BBQ Festival is almost upon us and we want to make sure your Friday and Saturday is all about fun, not about parking. So, here's some advice for those planning on coming to The District. As always, we thank you for your patience.

The following streets will be closed starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, through 4 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11:

The Columbia Art League hosts an intriguing show August 23 – October 1 with an Opening Reception on Thursday, September 1.

An anthology of 125 short stories, each told in 25 words or fewer, is the inspiration and muse for this juried show. Editor Robert Swartwood’s book Hint Fiction: An Anthology of Stories in 25 words or Fewer (published by W.W.Norton & Company, New York) is a compilation of stories, which each suggest a larger, more complex story.

Artists were invited to choose one of the works in the book, taking the story as the title and inspiration for their work. This is a juried show open to CAL members and non-members.

Temporary closure on Orr Street

The city of Columbia announces that on Sunday, Aug. 21, Orr Street will be closed to allow for the removal of a radio tower located near the corner of Walnut and Orr streets. Crews will begin removing the tower at 7 a.m. and should be finished by 11 a.m., weather permitting.

The 100 block of Orr Street will be closed between Walnut Street and the alley near Wilson's Gym located at 111 Orr St. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to take an alternate route during this time period.

The 160-foot radio tower was donated to the city of Columbia by Timberlake Engineering P.C. to be used by Public Safety Joint Communications.

Family Fun Fest

Go "Around the World" at the next Family Fun Fest! Parks and Recreation will hold the internationally themed event from 6 to 8 p.m. on August 17 at Flat Branch Park.

Kids will experience what other children around the world do for fun. Visitors will be able to view the "Portrait of a Sister City" photo exhibit featuring Suncheon, South Korea and the whole family will enjoy music with performances by:

MUDRA (MU Dance and Recreation Association): MUDRA's dancers through the medium of Odissi, the most ancient classical dance form of India will explore the beauty of nature in spring by their graceful movements, postures and vibrant footwork. In the concluding chapter of their recital they will bring before the audience a moment from ancient India where dancers will offer this dance to the divine as practiced in temples those days.

Friends of China: Performances including Diabolo (Chinese Yo-Yo), Tibetan Dance, Chinese Martial Arts, Waist Drum and a variety of children's dances.

UDA (Universal Drum Appeal): The UDA sound is deeply anchored in African drumming traditions, as well in Afro-Latin & Afro-Caribbean traditions. The group's philosophy centers on the concept of promoting Peace, Justice & Global Harmony through music.

The Fun Fests feature a new theme each month and offer free entertainment for the entire family such as music, special performances, art activities, bounce-houses, hands-on activities, balloon-animals, face painting and fun for all ages.

Asphalt Mill and Overlay

COLUMBIA, MO (August 3, 2011) - The city of Columbia Public Works Department announces that on Thursday, Aug. 4, APAC Missouri Inc. will begin pavement milling and overlay on the following streets, weather permitting:

*Rogers Street - Eighth Street to Providence Road

*Fifth Street - Elm Street to Rollins Road

*Wilson Avenue - College Avenue to east end

This work will result in temporary lane restrictions on the streets listed above. The work should be completed and the streets fully reopened each day, weather permitting. Parking on the street will be restricted during this period. Motorists and pedestrians are urged to exercise extreme caution when in the construction area and use an alternate route whenever possible. Mill and overlay work is expected to take approximately 30 days, weather permitting.

Commerce Bank hosts Food Drive for Kids

Commerce Bank is helping the Food Bank supply peanut butter to the Buddy Packs again this year and they need your help!

Buddy Packs are taken home by school students who are in the free and reduced lunch programs so that they have nutritious food to eat over the weekends and holidays--food such as canned fruit, individual servings of cereal, pudding and jello packs, peanut butter crackers, jelly, pop-top pasta meals, dried fruits and nuts, cheese crackers, granola bars, and juice boxes.The Food Bank estimates that it costs approximately $100 to provide a Buddy Pack for one student during one school year. Thankfully, The Food Bank receives donated food items, backpacks, and donations in order to help so many hungry children. There are a number of items that they need to purchase such as peanut butter and applesauce.

That's where you come in.

Starting August 1 through the 12th, Commerce Bank will have Food Bank barrels in their lobbies to collect jars of peanut butter. If you go shopping this weekend please pick up a jar or 2 or 10! For some of the kids who get a Buddy Pack this peanut butter & the rest of the goodies in the back pack are all that is between them and hunger. But we can help!

The Museum of Art and Archaeology, 106 Pickard Hall on the University of Missouri campus, will screen the 1959 film “Some Like It Hot” at 7 tonight as part of its regular free film series.

Director Billy Wilder’s film centers on two musicians, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), who witness a mob massacre. In an attempt to escape the gangsters responsible, they disguise themselves as women and join an all-female band on its way to Miami. MU Summer Rep Theatre presents “The 39 Steps” & "Chicago"

MU Summer Repertory Theatre presents “The 39 Steps” at 2 p.m. today and 7:30 p.m. Friday. The company also presents “Chicago” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Saturday and 2 p.m. next Sunday.
