Free WiFi Planned for Roots n Blues Festival

Today Tech 2 and Full Stream Wireless announced they will be providing free public WiFi during the Roots n Blues n BBQ Festival on September 21 and 22.

Tech 2 and Full Stream Wireless have been providing the festival with WiFi for its internal ticketing operation but this is the first year they’ll be extending that service to festival attendees. Free WiFi will be available within the festival footprint, an area roughly covering Flat Branch Park, the BBQ area between Fourth St. and Sixth St., Peace Park, and sections of Eighth St.

“We think this is a really cool addition to the festival,” said Steve Sweitzer, one of the festival organizers. “Now it will be even easier for people check our festival app on their phones and get immediate access to lineups, maps and other information.”

The Roots n Blues mobile application isn’t the only benefit to free WiFi. Attendees will be able to use mapping apps to find their way around, check out the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau website, pay for parking at some of the meters, and find online recommendations for places to eat in The District.

“Not only will free WiFi help attendees get information about the festival itself, they can also go online to find shops and restaurants downtown—and even check out some of the festival discounts businesses are offering during the event,” said Richard King, festival organizer.

According to www.gigaom.com, WiFi use has increased tremendously as the popularity of smart phones has increased. Nearly 98% of WiFi consumers log onto WiFi networks once daily and 84% want citywide WiFi. They also found that 91% of users expect WiFi when traveling and 90% of users make hotel and travel decisions based on WiFi availability. Access to free WiFi is the top question visitors to Columbia have, according to both local hoteliers and the Parks and Recreation Department.
