From Utility to Art
Most people are familiar with our traffic box art program here in The District--and if you like those, get ready for storm drain art!
People often think that water flows from our storm drains into a treatment facility but the runoff actually goes directly into our streams. The City of Columbia has teamed up with Thumper Entertainment (the awesome folks behind Roots 'n Blues, the SLP concerts, and the Blues in the Schools mural) to remind us to protect our local streams.
To make this happen, they found seven fantastic local artists who agreed to let their creative minds go to work on the storm drains. Dennis Murphy (of Hitt & Broadway traffic box fame), Deborah Zemke, Rodger Francis, Ben Chlapek, Jenny McGee, Mike Sledd, Maura Mudd, Lisa Barlett, and Jane Mudd--and we can't wait to see what they've all got up their sleeves.
Check out the project details on our website, www.discoverthedistrict.com and if you haven't seen Andrew Glenn's Sixth and Walnut traffic box in person, take a look at our photo album.
